How Does the Nicotine Patch Work? |
Quitting Smoking With The Nicotine Patch is Almost Impossible! Learn How the Nicotine Patch Works and Why it Doesn't Help! One of the most popular methods people use to try to quit smoking is the nicotine patch. You hear about them fairly often, and heck, they're right next to the cigarettes at the store. Functionally, they're a good idea but they fall on their face when it comes to actual results.
Conceptually, the nicotine patch works by fulfilling your body's need for nicotine. Depending on how heavy of a smoker you are, you start with either the 14mg or the 21mg patch, then slowly scale down to the 7mg patch, and then discontinue use.
With the patch applied, nicotine is absorbed through the skin gradually, over the course of the day. This eases the physical withdrawal symptoms of smoking, namely nicotine withdrawal.
The main problem with the nicotine patch is that it doesn't solve what causes people to want to smoke, it merely band-aids the symptoms. Thinking back, nobody can ever remember when they said to themselves, "Hey, I want to become a pack a day smoker". While there is a physical craving for cigarettes, it is completely dwarfed by the mind's craving for cigarettes.
Smoking is a mental trigger based addiction. Stressed? Smoke a cigarette. On the phone? Smoke a cigarette. Just got off work? Smoke a cigarette. Even with the nicotine patch on, your mind still wants you to smoke, because it doesn't crave the nicotine as much as it craves the idea of smoking.
Naturally, the best way to quit smoking is to cure the mental causes of smoking. When I quit smoking, I didn't need any sort of nicotine replacement, I merely had to curb my mind's want to smoke cigarettes. There are a number of great guides out on the net about how to go about this:

#1: The EasyQuit System
The EasyQuit system is very well written. The book actually encourages you to smoke while you read, so you won't feel any sort of apprehension towards starting with this book. The one on one communication present in the Quit Smoking Right Now Guaranteed program, below, isn't there, but the quality of the writing makes up for it. A very good read, especially if you're not sure about quitting. It makes it, as the title hints, easy!

#3: Quit Smoking Today
Priced the same as the EasyQuit System, I didn't find Quit Smoking Today as well put together as the other two cessation programs. The writing style was a little harder to digest compared to the EasyQuit System, but it made up for it (and made this list) because of the bonuses included with the program, such as the stress relief audio program (which is actually quite good).
