How to Quit Smoking Cold Turkey

Long regarded as the most difficult way to quit, quittting smoking cold turkey is actually not as hard as it's made out to be. Just the opposite, in fact, because it works a heck of a lot better than the other methods out there.

The key to quitting cold turkey is preparation. You need to know what to expect, when to expect it, and how to deal with it. The downside is that it requires you to maintain focus and keep in mind your goal at all times.

The upside, however, is that it works. Many other methods lull you into a false sense of security by telling you that with their patch, gum, hard candy, snake oil, or other fancy thing you will be completely cured of smoking, so long as you provide them 12 easy payments of a whole bunch of money and...yeah, they're just making a bunch of money selling some silly sticker. These methods don't work because they deal with nicotine addictions all wrong (for more on this, see our article on how smoking addictions work.)

What To Expect
Alright, let's get down to brass tacks. The first three days are going to be the absolute worst. You will be tempted the most by cravings, you will be the most irritable, and your resolve won't have strengthened by then. Note that you can't really do those three days by locking yourself in a room, because you need to be exposing yourself to temptation to help build up your mental defenses against it.

There are a number of great ways to ensure that you won't feel the need to smoke when presented with the opportunity. You can read all about them in this guide on how to quit smoking. It shows you the many ways in which cigarettes have taken hold on your mind, and how to take back control!
